STUDENTS WHO wish to make a career in environmental engineering
can opt for B.Tech (Energy and Environmental Engineering) offered
by the Agricultural Engineering College and Research Institute,
one of the constituent colleges of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural
University (TNAU).
Besides education aimed at meeting global energy and environmental
needs, the University will focus on entrepreneurial skills, management
qualities and business acumen.
Engineering concepts
This is a four-year, full-time programme offered over eight
semesters in an institution accredited by the All India Council
for Technical Education (AICTE) and the Indian Council of Agricultural
Research (ICAR). Students will work in modern laboratories and
also benefit from industry internship.
Along with engineering concepts, the curriculum covers areas such
as environmental science and engineering, energy production technology,
public health engineering, natural resource management, industrial
hygiene and management, power plant engineering, urban waste management
and development, co-generation, waste heat recovery systems and
industrial wastewater treatment. Also in the curriculum are air,
soil and water pollution engineering, remote sensing engineering,
information technology, geographical information system, environmental
biochemistry and microbiology, environmental Acts, environmental
impact assessment, energy auditing and management, instrumentation
and control, computer and software techniques.
Pollution control
Graduates can opt for self-employment as pollution control
consultants, energy auditors or entrepreneurs. Employment opportunities
were available in the sago, sugar, seafood, pesticide, waste recycling,
biomass, dyeing, textile, paper, pulp, dairy, tannery, solar and
wind energy industries. Admission is through the Tamil Nadu Professional
Courses Entrance Examination (TNPCEE) with mathematics, physics
and chemistry in Plus Two or its equivalent. Counselling for admission
would be on the main campus. It was a self-financing course.
