| Santhome Hr. Sec. School,
nearly 184 years old, has a rich tradition of history. The Montfort
Brothers of St. Gabriel have been at the helm of affairs since
1954 and for fifty golden years have steered the institution
towards qualitative and quantitative progress in every field.
On this happy occasion of the Golden Jubilee Celebration of
the Montfortian presence in Santhome, it is my proud privilege
to launch the school into the worldwide website. It is a knowledge
driven world today, where the computers have revolutionized
technology and the Internet has permeated every field of knowledge.

www.santhomeschool.net is a step towards creating
a global community of students, teachers and parents. I'm sure the
long felt need and the dreams of the old students to keep in touch
with one another and their Alma mater will be realized through this
and bring them once again close to the hearth of their second home.

| Profile |
The School
|
San Thome Hr. Sec. School, one
of the oldest Educational establishments in Chennai, is a Montfortian
Institution. It was established in 1821 by Rev. Fr. Dom Frey
Manuel De Ave Maria, the Episcopal administrator of the old
Diocese of Mylapore.
Prior to its inception, an Orphanage and a Preparatory Seminary
was started by the Dioceses at the behest of Sir John De Monte,
the great benefactor of the Diocese. |
The St. Francis Xavier's Primary School established
by Dom Frey was a support school to the Seminary and the Orphanage.
In 1864 it was raised to the grade of Middle School and was popularly
known as the “Anglo Vernacular School” having both English
and Tamil as medium of Instruction.
| In 1871, the new building was put
up by Fr. Amarante and was solemnly declared open by Lord Napier,
the then Governor of Chennai (the Park near Periyar Bridge is
still called Napier Park). Simultaneously Fr. Amarante raised
the school to the grade of a ‘High School' and named it
‘San Thome High School'. In 1894, the Bishop of Mylapore,
Sanction and upgraded it to a Second Grade College. In 1906,
the Government by G.O. ordered to separate the education of
the Anglo Indian boys, and subsequently in 1907 an additional
school had to be opened for this purpose. |

This offshoot school of San Thome (St. Bede's)
reduced the total number of students in San Thome and hence it lost
the College Grade and became a High School once again.

|
In 1954 the Archbishop of Chennai
- Mylapore entrusted the School to the Montfort Brothers
of St.Gabriel. Till 1954, the School was run by the Diocesan
Clergy, but it had Principals of different nationalities including
Portuguese, Dutch and Jewish as well as Indians. In 1978 the
school was raised Hr. Sec. School. Montfort preparatory School
a feeder School for Santhome Hr. Sec. School was started in
1965. |
Today it has all the necessary infrastructure
that an ideal school can dream of: Spacious Class rooms, Libraries,
Science Labs, Computer Labs, Playgrounds, and Auditorium an Indoor
Stadium and Gym / Fitness center.
At present it has a strength of nearly 4000 students. The biggest
asset of San Thome is its dedicated Staff and Motivated Students.
Its glorious past is present in its envious present, and the present
is shaping its future. |

| Facilities |
| Extensive and spacious Libraries
(one for Montfort and another for San Thome) provide ample opportunities
for the students to cultivate reading habit. The main Library
is computerised and includes a wide range of books to cater
to needs of children of different age groups. A separate Library
period is alloted upto Std VIII. Students are encouraged to
make use of the lending facility. For this academic year we
have set a minimum target of three books per student. This is
compulsory. |
Library |
Of these books, atleast one book should be in their language (Tamil/Hindi/French)
one in English and one in any subject. Of these, atleast one book
should be academic subject related. A summary of the books should
be submitted to the teachers concerned for evaluation, and this evaluation
report will be taken into consideration for promotion. Those who fail
to satisfy this target may not be considered for promotion. You are
welcome to gift any number of books even if they are old ones. |

'Exhibitions' are organised in various disciplines periodically. Through
these activities we aim, at developing the child into 'total person'
by bringing out the best in him. The activities and associations that
