The Vokkaligara Sangha was founded in 1906 in
Bangalore City and was registered in 1907 under the Societies Registration
Act in erstwhile Mysore State. The main objectives of the Sangha
are to promote social, cultural and educational aspirations of agricultural
community. It is being managed by the elected members representing
the entire agricultural community of Karnataka State. During the
pre-independence period, there was sufficient academic colleges particularly
in cities in Mysore State. Therefore, the Sangha started a dormitary
type of 'Vokkaligara Sangha Hostel' for the benefit of rural agricultural
students and others who would come for academic education in the
city of Bangalore. After independence, greater awakening took place
in all the fields including education. In addition, in 1957, the
Greater Karnataka was formed by ceding some backward areas of Maharastra,
Hyderabad, Tamil Nadu and later on Coorg, to the Mysore State. On
account of these factors, there was larger number of influx of students
into the academic institutions, resulting in decreased opportunities
to the educational aspirants of agricultural community.
Therefore, during the past three decades, the Sangha established
several academic institutions in most of the disciplines in the
main campus at V. V. Puram which is located in the heart of Bangalore
city; a sattelite campus for basic medical sciences at Banashankari
about 4 kilometers away from V. V. Puram and another sattelite
campus at Sreegandada Kaval in the Western out-skirts of Bangalore
city up to now, 14 educational institutions have been established.
