Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College, Allahabad, an institute with total commitment to quality and excellence in academic pursuits, is among one of the leading RECs in INDIA and was established in year 1961 as a joint enterprise of Govt. of India and Govt. of U.P. in accordance with the scheme of establishment of REC the affairs and finances of the college are managed by a board of Governers.

The foundation stone of the college was laid by the Late Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru on the 3rd of May 1961 on a site spreading over an area of 222 acres on the banks of river Ganga.The main college was inaugurated by the Late Prime Minister Sri. Lal Bahadur Shastri on the 18th of April, 1965.

The college is an associated college of Allahabad University, and being the only engineering college in the University, enjoys considerable freedom in academic affairs

The students are extensively exposed to cross-culural environment as candidates from varius other countries such as Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Mauritius, Malaysia, Iran, Yemen, Iraq, Palestine and Thailand also join MNREC for varius undergraduate and post-graduate programs.

MNREC is fully residential institutions with six hostels for boys and two for girls. One hostel is exclusively for post graduate students.

The college came into existance to offer Bachelor Degree Programmes in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Branches in 1961. After consolidating these courses an undergraduate program in Computer Science was started in year 1976-77. Subsequently in the year 1982-83 undergraduate programmes in Electronics Engg. and Production and Industrial Engg. were started.

Post Graduate Cources were introduced in the year 1970-71 by starting M.E. Degree cources in all engineering departments. The college now offer 13 M.E. degree programs and M.C.A. course and registers candidates for Ph.D. degree. The college has been recognised by the Government of India as one of the centres for the quality improvement programme in Civil and Mechanical Engg. To add anew dimension to itself the college has started a two year / four semesters Post Graduate Degree in Management Studies from 1996.

In the year of 1972 the college initiated a project and established an industrial estate with 68 sheds with objective of encouraging entrepreneurs and creating additional aveneus.

Recently the college was selected as a leading institute in the 'design' theme under under Indo-UK REC Project. Under this scheme a Design Center has been established at a cost of about Rs. Six Crore, which offers training and consultancy in varius areas.
