The College, set up in 1960 and affiliated to the University
of Calcutta, has 6 science departments, namely Physics, Chemistry,
Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics & Economics, all
teaching at the honours level. It has two humanities departments
- English and History - which teach honours. Besides, there are
departments of Bengali, Political Science, Sanskrit, Biology,
Hindi, Philosophy and Sanskrit. The college also offers the H.S.
course of the W.B.Council of Higher Secondary Education. The
results of the H.S. students in the H.S. exams and those of the
Honours students in the University exams are commendable.
Since the college is dedicated to the ideal of man-making and
character building education as propounded by Swami Vivekananda,
the college lays much emphasis on values both moral and spiritual
and on games and sports. The College has well-equipped prayer
halls at the hostels; cricket, football and table-tennis teams
which perform quite creditably in different sports meets.
At the beginning of the session senior students welcome the
freshers through Vidyarthi Brata ceremony which seems to be an
antidote to ragging. Cultural activities are high up on the list
of priorities here. Drama, Quiz, Debates, Musical treats etc.
are held at regular intervals.
The staff consist of men who are inspired by Swamiji's ideal
of sacrifice and service. The members of the staff who reside
on and around the campus participate in the corporate life of
the institution. The students, therefore, learn from them outside
the classroom.
