On the recommendation of the committee constituted under the
Chairmanship of Hon’ble G V Mavalankar, an Act was passed
in 1949 by the Bombay Legislature for establishment and incorporation
of Gujarat University as a teaching and affiliating univ. The
univ was incorporated in November, 1950. The univ regulates, supervises
and controls postgraduate instruction through its postgraduate
centres and departments.
Jurisdiction
Districts of Ahmedabad, Kaira (excluding the limits of
Vallabh Vidyanagar in Anand Taluka and the area with a radius
of 5 miles from the office of Sardar Patel University), Panchmahals,
Sabarkantha, Banaskantha (excluding Abu Road Taluka which forms
part of the State of Rajasthan), Baroda (excluding the area comprising
the city of Baroda and territories within a radius of 10 miles
from the office of Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda), Mehsana
and Kutch. The univ has 224 affiliated colleges and 14 recognised
institutions. Enrolment (2002-3) 78,881.

Scholarships and Fellowships
National Merit Scholarships of Rs 120 pm each, Junior Research
Fellowship of Rs 8000 pm and Senior Research Fellowship of Rs
9000 pm each by UGC for those who have cleared National Educational
Test.
Private Studies
Candidates whose mother-tongue is Gujarati or those who
have resided continuously for a period of one year in Gujarat
State preceding the date of their application are eligible to
appear at BA, BCom, MA, MCom exams as private candidates.
Evening Classes Part-time certificate course in Comp Programming
and MBA are conducted in the evening.
Academic Year
Terms Two terms. I Term June to Oct; IITerm Nov to April.
Admissions Generally June 15 every year. Examinations Annual exams
March and April, Supplementary exams-Oct.

Special Features
Semester System has been introduced in the faculties of
technology, engineering, law and business administration.
Miscellaneous
SC/ST Cell looks after implementation, monitoring, evaluation
and planning of SC/ST reservation.
Sports & Games The univ has on its campus a cinder- track
with a small stadiatype pavilion with grounds for Football, Cricket,
Hockey and small stadium for Volleyball, Basketball, Kabaddi &
Kho-Kho courts, in addition to facilities that are provided in
almost all affiliated colleges for their students.
Health Centre has a Resident Medical Officer and other staff.
The centre has X-Ray facilities.
Hostels 6 PG univ hostels with 444 seats for men and 193 for women.
Charges Boarding Rs 225 and lodging is Rs 75 pm (approx).
