The long cherished demand reflecting
the aspirations of the Andhra's to have a teaching University of
theirs has materialized in the year 1925 when the Andhra University
was constituted by an act of the Madras legislature, Madras Act.
No. II of 1926. The Andhra University made its beginning as a residential
institution with its special concern for honors and postgraduate
teaching though it has affiliating responsibilities of the old Madras
University from which it has spread. The University was contemplated
to set an example by running it on lines similar to Manchester and
Leeds imparting training not only in the ordinary courses of study,
but also in specialized branches which bear direct relationship
to the industrial establishments in the adjacent districts.

Sri Krishnadevaraya University,
Anantapur, came into existence on July 25, 2025 fulfilling a silent
demand and a long cherished dream of the people of Rayalaseema.
The University is named after a great patron of learning and the
arts, Sri Krishnadevaraya, of the glorious Vijayanagara empire of
the sixteenth century. The University is an offshoot of the erstwhile
Postgraduate Centre of Sri Venkateswara University started in 1968.
