Located in a sprawling thousand acre campus at the foot of the picturesque Seven Hills(Seshachala Hills of Eastern Ghats), the University has been emphasising teaching and research programmes in different faculties right from its inception. The range of subject departments, courses and research programmes undertaken and promoted during the last 40 years reflect the Sri Venkateswara University's commitment to promoting socially relevant programmes the one hand and to catch up with frontier areas of research and training on the other.Starting with the basic science and social science departments of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, Economics and Philosophy in 1954-55, the univesity today has over 40 subject departmetns including Biochemistry, Virology,Management, Home Science, Computer Applications, Computer Science, Electronic Space and Communication Emgineering. The University offers more than 40 graduate and Post graduate programmes in all branches of humanitics, social sciences, basic sciences, Engineering Management and in some of the frontier areas such as Environmental Studies, Atmospheric Science, Computer Applications, Computer Science and Engineering, virology, Biotechnology, Sericulture, Fishery Science Fashion Technology and Engineering Physics. besides, the University has been offering M.phil. and Ph.D. research programmes in almost every subject discipline.
Equiped with the most modem laboratory facilities and a very strong library resource system, the University has been conducting sponserd and funded research in soveral key areas such as Water Resource Management, Rural Sanitation, Low Cost Housing, Alternative Systems of energy, MST RadarApplications, Environmental Stidies. A good deal of research activity of Sri Venkateswara University is a response to the problems of drought prone semi-arid Rayalaseema region.

The University has been a Centre for intellectual activities, growth of ideas and experimentation. A large numbr of outstanding scholars have been visitiors of this University. Eminent persons like Dr.Sarvepalli Radakrishnan, Pandit Jawaharla Nehru, His Holiness sanaracharya, Sri P.V.Narasimha Rao, Dr.Shankardayal Sharma, Dr.Karan Siangh, Prof Nilhar ranjan Ray, Justice Ranganath Mistra, Dr.S.Gopal, Dr.H.N.Setna, dr.HomiBaba and Prof.G.K.Menon visited this University and stimulated the academic activity at various points of time during the last 40 years.

In the life of a University, 40 years is but a brief period, yet it is vitally important.It is durin this stage that sound academic foundations are laid on which a lasting super structure can be built. The S.V.University has been succefull not only in laying solid foundations but in completiing the superstructure. The UGC, the Government of Andhra Pradesh, several funding agencies, University bodies, faculty and students have contributed to the successful development of the University which is well poised to take a big leap forward.
