The Oil Technological Research Institute
was established in 1949, at Anantapur, by the Government of the Composite
Madras State. The Institute which was working under the Department
of Industries was transferred to the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological
University in 1985.
The institute is only one of its kind in India solely devoted
to Research and Development in Science and Technology of Oils,
Fats, and related subjects. Situated on a ten-acre plot, it has
facilities on the Laboratory as well as pilot plant scale for conducting
research in the Chemistry and Technology of Oils and Fats. A large
numbers of Research Publications and Patients taken by the Institute
testify to the work done by it.
Project reports on technologies of Mango Kernel Fat, Azadirachtin
rich Neem oil, CottonSeed Oil are made available to industry. Rapport
with Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and National
Oil Seeds and Vegetable Oils (NOVODB) are maintained for the dissemination
of research results, and for promotion technology at rural level.
The Institute maintains a close touch with the oil based industries
and is attending to the numerous enquires seeking technical guidance,
suggestion and information's. It has actively collaborated with
bureau of Indian Standards, New Delhi, in formulating standards
for a numbers of oil ands their products.
The Institute has won 6 gold medals and 10 national awards. The
institute has prepared 100 schemes for smallscale industries. Apart
from about 600 research papers, the Institute has published 4 books.
Among the notable research contributions of the Institute are
processing techniques of Indian Cotton Seeds, optimum conditions
for expelling groundnuts, novel method of pressing gingelly seed,
processing technique for recovery of fatty acids and glycerin from
non-edible and low grade fats, extraction of Solanesol from tobacco
waste, recovery of valuable fine chemicals like vitamins, pigments,
sterols etc. from oils by the method of molecular distillation,
a field kit for determination of moisture in groundnut, and techniques
for utilisation of sunflower oil vax preparation of Lanolin from
indigenous wool grease. |
