The Makhanalal Chaturvedi Rashtriya Patrakarita
Vishwavidyalaya, Bhopal was set up by Act No. 15 captioned "Madhya
Pradesh Makhanlal Chaturvedi Rashtriya Patrakarita Vishwavidyalaya
Sansthan Adhiniyam, 1990". of the Govt. of Madhya Pradesh,
to commemorate the birth centenary of renowned freedom-fighter,
veteran Hindi poet and honoured journalist Pt. Makhanlal Chaturvedi.
The University was formally inaugurated by the then Vice-President
of India, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, on 16th January, 1991.
This University, having a unique character in the whole of Asia, was
set up with the objective of providing high quality and innovative
education, training and research in the specific fields of Mass Communication,
Journalism, Library and Information Science, Public Relations, Computer
Applications and Information Technology. the University is being developed
as a pioneering center for dissemination of knowledge and skills in
these fields. It also aims at evolving appropriate technology and softwa4re
for rural and tribal communication through journalism, library science
and development of appropriate graphic interfaces.
The University believes in the synthesis of theoretical and practical
knowledge. the aim of the University is not to create an army of career
seeking persons but to produce professionals who are committed and
accountable to the society and the nation as a whole.
The University enjoys a unique administrative and academic structure.
The Vice-President of India is the visitor of the University.
The University is governed by the general council headed by the Chief
Minister of Madhya Pradesh. the Council has distinguished dignitaries
amongst its members, including State Finance Minister, State Public
Relations Minister, State Education Minister, Nominee of parliament,
Chairman of the Press council of India, representatives from various
State Governments eminent journalists, media experts and scholar. The
Director General of the University is the Secretary of this Council.
The University has also an Academic Council which is the supreme academic
body charged with the responsibility of maintaining high standards
in various courses and curricula. This Council approves the Courses
and governs the academic standards.
The University is a member of the Association of Common Wealth Universities,
London and of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). The State
Government offers development grant, building grant, land allotment
etc. as and when needed, to the University.
The University Grants Commission has recognized this University vide
its No. F.9-4/92 (PP-1) dated 27th November, 1992 as a statutory University
