nearing Silver Jubilee continues with a new vigour to prove its credibility
and sustain its worldwide reputation. The genesis of the University is
to be read with the history of the University of Madras. The erstwhile
postgraduate extension centre of the University of Madras formed the base
for the newly created University with the name of the revolutionary Tamil
Poet Bharathidasan. The coat of arms and the maxim inscribed around the
logo speak for the vibrancy and the preparedness for the growth of the
University. The base gave space for establishment of new areas of study
in the realm of higher education and lent spirit for the soundness of academic
programmes.
The University has twenty six academic Departments and supporting facilities
including a Central Library, Computer Centre, Internet Centre, Auditorium,
Gymnasium, Yoga Centre, Pavilions, Hostels for boys and girls, Canteen
etc. The infrastructure spread out in 1000 acres are connected by arterial
roadways and boulevards.
The Bharathidasan University has been a pioneer in offering unique academic
programmes in arts and science through its departments and colleges and
institutions affiliated to it. It is a matter of pride to cite that Bharathidasan
University was the first university in the country to offer B.Sc in Computer
Science. We also took a lead in offering MCA programme. It is even before
the wave of information technology originated in India. The computer professionals
in the country include a sizable percentage of the alumni of Bharathidasan
University.
The leadership of the University in some areas of science is identifiable
with National Facility for Marine Cyanobacteria in the School of Life Sciences
and Centre for Non Linear Dynamics in the Department of Physics. Advanced
researches and training are undertaken by these centres along with offering
degrees at UG and PG levels. And, these centres enjoy their reputation
in the academia of India and abroad and extend their corridors linking
a good number of world class centres of excellence in scientific researches.
Such centres have been helping in causing speedy growth of the University
Departments which became kins to them. Plant biotechnology, Animal biotechnology,
Eco-biotechnology, Sericulture, etc. are integral areas in the School of
Biotechnology. The Department of Chemistry has been cited for outstanding
researches in the modern chemical world, fiercely competing with biological
sciences.
The Bharathidasan Institute of Management (BIM) is among the top ten
Business Schools of the country. Similarly, the School of Engineering &
Technology is an upcoming School of Excellence. The Energy Department has
a special thrust in industry / consultancy services. The university has
also a creditable Centre for Remote Sensing and the Departments of Geo-sciences.
Our Centre for Distance Education is unique that its programmes are at
par with those of formal system both in designing and delivery.
The Departments in the faculty of Social Sciences and Languages have
been active in closely working with society and directly interacting with
agencies responsible for implementation of schemes in the sectors of water,
health education, social welfare, employment, etc. They are in other words
sensors of the policies and issues of the Government and the society, respectively.
The Department of Physical Education is well advanced its activities for
researches by intermixing the traditional techniques with the modern science
on health and physical development.
The grandeur of the University is enhanced from time to time by the
age and experience of the faculty members and administrative staff. It
is an impressive observation that a dozen of faculty members have been
conferred with awards / honors by agencies including CSIR, TNSCS&T,
INSA, ICAR, IES, ICMR, etc. in India and Academia of Sciences in Italy,
Germany, Japan, Poland, etc. Limit to growth is far beyond the dreams of
the young faculty members and scholars of the University. The sustainable
higher education may find a meaning with Bharathidasan University.
