In the 19th century, Virudhunagar known as
Virudhupatty was the most significant commercial center in Tinnevely
District. But there was no substantial growth in the field of education.
As a sequel to the efforts of the philanthropists and seers of
the village, a primary school was founded on the 26th November
1889, for boys, a girls' school in 1910, and a college for boys,
named Virudhunagar Hindu Nadar SenthiKumara Nadar College in 1947.
Womenfolk aspiring for higher education had to go to distant places.
The responsible citizens and the prominent personalities of Virudhunagar
felt that the growth of the nation depends as much on the education of
women as that of men. As a result the Kshatriya Vidhyasala Girls' Higher
Secondary School managing board made a fervent plea to the VHNSN College
paripalana sabai to take up the responsibilities of opening Virudhunagar
Home Science College for Women. This appeal was seriously considered
and discussed threadbare under the leadership of Thiru S.P.Kothala Nadar.
An Application for permission to start a Home science College for Women
was submitted to the Madras University on 28th December 1961.The Managing
Board of K.V. Sala High School permitted to make use of a portion of
their building in pottal, near the bus-stand to start the college.
It was proposed to start pre-university courses - Group A and B, from
June 1962, and B.A and B.Sc. courses from 1963. In the syndicate meeting
of 23rd June 1962 Provisional affiliation was granted to start pre-university
courses with strength not exceeding 160 in two batches.
A Committee was formed to mobilize fund. Thiru T.M.N Rajakkani Nadar
contributed the first donation of Rs. 5000/-. The first lady to contribute
liberally was Tmty V.V.V. Muthammal, who donated Rs. 1001/-.
The principal with 15 members of teaching faculty and 10-non-teaching
staff joined duty on 23rd June 1962. The regular class work commenced
on 27th June 1962. Thus it was due to the untiring efforts of the zealous
educationists and visionaries of the town, the College for women came
into being in Virudhunagar.
In the beginning the college functioned under the name and style of "Virudhunagar
Women's College". Later, in recognition of the meritorious services
rendered to the VHNSN paripalana sabai by Sri V.V.Vanniaperumal Nadar
of Virudhunagar in securing the lands required for the college and for
raising funds needed for the establishment and maintenance of the College,
the Sabai resolved to change the name of the College as "V.V.Vanniaperumal
College for Women".
Thus it is a student welfare oriented institution marching towards the
year of Golden Jubilee celebration. At present the college offers 13
U.G. and 4 P.G. courses in the regular stream, and 7 U.G. and 5 P.G.
un-aided courses .The student strength is 1647 in regular and 775 in
un-aided courses and the strength of teaching faculty is 97 in regular
role and 67 in un-aided courses. Among the teaching staff 71 are M.Phil.
and 16 are Ph.D. holders.
